No more

No more ten minute breaks. No more evening thoughts. No more. No more job that I hate. No more overtime madness. No more pretending. No more. No more waking up to, oh shit. No more sitting and waiting. No more blaming the boss. No more wondering what if I quit. What if I took a risk. No more.

Ten Minute Break: don't give up!

Heavy breathing interrupted his thoughts. "Maybe..." Inhale, exhale. "This..." Inhale, exhale. "Wasabadidea!" Then slam, he fell flaccid to the ground, only to be picked up quickly by a strong grip that almost tore off his backpack. "Keep moving." So he did.

Ten Minute Break: face lift

I updated the look of this page because I had to. The new blogger templates have better options when it comes to page navigation. I also happened to find a premade design that features a light house, or "harbor," theme.

I like that.

My ass, kicked

Body: I went to the gym yesterday after more than a week of inactivity supplemented by drinking. Luckily I ate fairly well, taking care to eat greens and staying away from shit (don't eat shit). So I had a comfortable week, no digestive problems. And yesterday I found myself running a hard two miles, and lifting for a solid fourty minutes. It felt great. This morning, however, I feel terrible. I'm tired and sleepy, and I'm not even sure if its soreness or just pure shock my body is going through.

Mind: Yet again I wake up late and try not to hate myself too much for starting the day off with incompetence. Yet again I sit in my cube feeling as if my life is going nowhere. Yet again I feel like I need something more. More than the satisfaction that I did a good days work for good money. Because, that feels good somedays, but other days its hard to remember my long term plans and truck ahead. Other days, most days, I fast forward my entire life in my head, only to see the dreary dark end.

Spirit: I haven't drawn, written, spoken, sung, danced, or screamed, in too long. I laugh though, and that gets me by. My cubemate is always great to snicker with. I had dinner with a friend last night whose sense of humor is comforting. And then there's music. I listened to a mix cd this morning, and that lifted my spirits up. But to neglect that essential list of disciplined cathartic exercises... that is to neglect living.

Staying Hungry, the Saga

I wonder if I'll ever get used to waking up next to you. It's weird that I wonder this as I wake up alone. The thought weighs me down, as it is well known that absence is heavier than any roomful of people. Despair is quickly next, as I wonder whether or not love can migrate from one person to another, or whether a part of me will be forever stranded on an island as the rest of my body drifts away in search of continent. Soon, will the whole of me be scattered across this single archipelago in the vast answer-less ocean?

But then I let it open. Laughter mingles with song, and it's all because of you. Oh friendly hand upon my head, look of love straight through to the heart, one embrace to get me by another day, see there's no need to pray, no need to call upon some heavenly help, give me earthly medicine for this earthly hurt, after all she's only a woman, and it's so easy to get confused about that, but still I know when you're near, that love is still alive, I'm so alive.

Reminds me that I need more than open eyes to break the sleep, break it open like glass shattered from baseball bats, forceful entry because I left the keys inside and I don't trust other guys, the cops the technicians or neighborhood thieves to pop open my own shell, I'll do it myself, one part my home two parts my vessel, I need more than a pair of arms and legs to wrestle, just give me teeth and bones and a rope, I'll fight with might discovered like hope buried in years of bad fucking jokes, break all ya'll smiles and silhouettes, fill, in, the spirit with a hunger, yes the absence is breath, don't wait for me to love ya, it's already set, climb upon the remnants of evidence, let your scream prove that we've never left, remind me again, what does it take to love?

[Sometimes, it's like I need this kind of writing to thaw myself out of a deadness, to truly wake up, I need some music, I need a self reminder, an earnest scramble.]

Evening Thoughts: What time is it there?

If there were a single theme I could muster from the past few years of my life, it would be "displacement."

Funny, because it's all relative to the years spent in high school. Even before those years, though, displacement has always been a part of my everyday. Growing up in Inwood, moving to Riverdale, and you know, they say it only matters as much as you make it matter, but I'm not so sure they're right. Being Asian-faced, having parents who have lived much of their lives in a distant Korea, and not relating to any particular face, class, language, or location, has always been a part of the feeling that I'm constantly shifting from one place to another.

But what marks these most recent years so special is that I've really pushed the extent to which I have moved from here, to there, to somewhere else. Geographically, I've never traveled so much--I lived in Seoul, Korea by myself for three summers, moving from a small apartment there, to college or home here (in New York), again and again. I've gone from New York to Seoul, from Dorm to Dorm, from Home to Apartment, from College to Work, from Relationship to Single, from Friends to other Friends, from Downtown to Uptown, from here to there, to somewhere else.

All this movement is really interesting in that it's like a sifter. You shake it from side to side, and the more vigor you exert the more you:

sift (sĭft)
v.sift·ed, sift·ing, sifts
v.tr.

1. To put (flour, for example) through a sieve or other straining device in order to separate the fine from the coarse particles.

Ten Minute Start: light on my feet

Kikuo Johnson, beautiful comics

I listened to "The Fray" and "R-Kelly" on the subway ride today, drawing sketches for my up coming single episode strip. The Fray say, "Everyone knows I'm in/ Over my head" and R-Kelly says "My mind is telling me no but my body my body's telling me yes." And oh man, this woman sat next to me and she smelled so good, and was wearing this beautiful yellow dress and red shoes. Yesterday's work-out was awesome.

I actually feel good, today.

Ten Minute Break: up-dates

Good morning!

It’s another week, and it’s another Monday. I woke up this morning and turned on “Do the Right Thing” and watched the first few minutes while getting ready for work; Spike Lee constantly amazes me with his theatre-esque direction and writing. He builds this world, colors it, and gives it a plurality of voices, each so strong, so insistent, and so obsessive. I picked up “The Invisible Man” and read it on the train. That book is scary how it talks to you, tells you things you’re not sure you’re ready to hear.

I took a different walking-route to work, and ended up getting a little protein drink (power apple pie, they call it). It was delicious. My friend is taking a road trip across America and he’s writing about it in his blog: American Jam Check it out. I spoke to another friend of mine last night, and he really opened my mind up. I was all stuck and hung up in a few impossibilities, and talking to him was like walking out into the cool morning sun. I’m co-writing with a friend a piece on a movie I’ve really enjoyed lately. I’ve set deadlines for certain projects relating to writing and drawing. And this week is going to be a pressure cooker. Big closing on Friday. Got to keep on moving.

Hatching a plan, designing my escape route...

Memory

It was the day of my brother's high school graduation, and my grandmother and I were sitting in the car. She reached into her purse and pulled out petals of jasmine flowers. I used to tell her how much I loved the smell when I visited her at her apartment. She gave them to me, by the clumps. They had fallen and she picked them up, thinking of me.

Good Morning

This is my roar in the morn, Singing Lord! give me more, stretch out my body at the shore, the sea is a rough page and I intend to make my mark on the biggest of all stages, pain is a part of growth, we all struggle to know since nothing is easy but everything's fair, compare not yourself to the weak hearted and scared, for you don't know the courage harbored in quiet shells.

Much of what I do these days, much of what I say, is a clumsy improvisation. A wild and desparate attempt to make shapes in the darkness. I try to speak truth, but truth is only possible with immense strength. I see such truthful words every once in a while and I am humbled. A wild brush fire burns quickly. I hope for pheonix's flight, and indeed, from the ashes I am reborn everyday. But even a bird that lives for a million years feels the fleeting nature of time.

Please excuse these ramblings for the moment. I promise to bring home something good, someday.

Peace.

Ten Minute Break: a short verse (after much thought)

the only promise that matters
is mine to me, and after many years
of being split between
hopeful and terribly dissapointed
it's about time I kept a promise
of mine to me.

Ten Minute Break: re-Boot

Get excited.

Excited to read these books I recently got. A guide to drawing Comic Books, a collection of Billy Collins's poems, a collection of essays on design, by Michael Bierut. Also recently got an issue of the economist. I haven't been up to date on my world news in a while. Nothing like a narrow point of view of everything to get me interested again. I have my lows, where I simply don't see the point of anything. But when I'm up, everything comes together and all the pieces fit as if everything is connected. Broadening the playing field. Stretching out my legs. Ready, set...

go.

Ten Minute Break: Other

Hey, it's been a while.

More thoughts on Otherness: Growing up, since middle school even, I've always looked to other people as models of how to-be. Otherness has come natural to me, for whatever reasons. Sometimes it has been oppressive. By looking at some other person as a reference point for self creation can be self destructive if in fact that other person is really a definition of what you are not, and what you are.

Sometimes otherness has proven liberating. It can be as simple as seeing an Asian face on a magazine cover or a movie--an Asian face that is not a martial artist, a computer nerd, or a foreigner, but someone who transcends these definitions and adds layers to the thick skin that goes deep to the bone. This kind of otherness is the best. It collapses otherness on itself. It points the flashlight of identity to find that the entire room can be lit.

Of course, some people tend to say we are all the same. We are all each others keepers. I believe this is a valid sentiment, but it is about something entirely different and separate from the issue of otherness, and not a solution. Sameness is important for empathy and understanding, and can be useful in communicating ideas and feelings. Sameness does not solve otherness, and when sameness is applied to otherness, it merely shows that otherness can be a human experience. I do believe we are all the same, but sometimes empathy without experience, and understanding without knowing, can be just as oppressive as willed ignorance, and forced teaching. Sameness is a way of relating to other people, otherness is a way to relate others to your self.

When you relate the other to yourself, and when you find that this experience expands the definition of what self can be, then otherness will no longer restrict your movements. Suddenly, every new encounter will add to your definitions, and of course, defining will no longer require "not" and "different from" but a string of "and"'s.

A: This is unacceptable!

A: I won't take it any longer! I demand a refund!

B: Hello? Is this where they keep the telephones?

A: It is! But they won't give a damn, if you ain't got a dime!

B: I've brought some change...

A: Have you got a dollar?

B: I haven't.

A: Then they won't let you talk.

B: I just need to call my son and tell him..

A: Tell him, Robert Kang needs another chance.

B: What?

A: Tell him, Robert Kang is sorry...

B: Who is...

A: But I'm still mad! (beat) You see, there, see that phone?" (walks over to phone)"This is the instrument of life, and of death. I called my wife on this phone. We've been married for 11 years. We just divorced.

B: I'm sorry, that must be hard..

A: No it's not. It's been over a year. It's not hard. The divorce is easy. I just called her, it's been over a year, and let me tell you, my tongue has never been so quick, never been so comfortable speaking my mind.

B: Good, I'm going to call my son, now.

A: Good, tell him...

B: I'm telling him to remember his dentist appointment.

A: Robert Kang knows it was his fault...

B: Hey, it's not your fault--

A: You don't even know what I'm talking about!

B: Sure I do, you're Robert Kang, right?

A: I am if I'm sorry.

B: Well are you?

A: She just makes it so damn hard. She has to tell it to you before you can 'fess up. It's like the rugs been pulled from underneath your feet.

B: Well, sorry. I have to make this call.

A: They won't let you.

B: Sure they will (lifts receiver) See? You don't even have to pay. (beings dialing)

"A" looks on as B speaks into the phone.

B: Hey. Remember to go to the dentist. What? Your mom can't take you? Can't you just go yourself? You're big enough, now.

A: (softly) Don't.

B: Okay, good. Call me when you're done... I'll pick you up. Okay, bye.

"B" Hangs up receiver.

A: Don't! (this time yelling)

B: What?

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

"Hello? -- Is anyone out there? (to himself:) That's a stupid question. Of course someones out there. (Continues yelling:) Hello? My name is Mark Cho! Hello? Mark Cho! Hello?"

(faint) "Hello..."

"Hello! I've been here for so long! I knew you were out there. Where are you? Keep yelling, or, I know, flash a light at me!"

(he sees a light in the distance)

"Oh, I see it. It looks like you're really far away. (to himself:) I hope this person can tell me where we are and how to get out of here. I hope the sun comes up soon, too. How long can it stay this way? How long is a night? I hope the days are just as long, or longer. (Walking, but still talking to himself:) I'm so relieved that... I mean, I knew it all along, but it's good to find out that I was right! Right all along.

(Man is eating breakfast in a restaurant)

How can I describe this? I can describe it as what it is not. It is not here, it is not there. It is not where it is supposed to be.

(sips orange juice)

It's first thing in the morning, when the sun is shining. I get up, and the only motivation I have is right there under the blankets with me. I'm tired of rubbing one out every morning--and always to the same fantasy! No, I can't tell you what that is. But it's a matter of drive. I grow tired, but I am most tired when I wake up. I don't know where I am, and who I am with. I feel a desperation for meaning, but my room offers none. So I rush.

(eyes grow wide)

I turn on some music, some Bach perhaps, I make my bed, I look at a list of things to do I've written the night before, I take a shower, and then I grab my things and run out the door, minding the lock, and rush to a restaurant where I can sit and enjoy the company of strangers. I enjoy a book, the food, and the clamor of many other morning people.

(pulls out newspaper and acts as if reading)
